Luxury Gemstone Product Photography | Photographing a Rare Nuummite Stone
Photographing a Rare Nuummite Stone for Luxury Presentation
This rare Nuummite stone from Greenland was photographed as part of a luxury gemstone product photography project created for premium online presentation and potential international sale. The piece was being considered for high-end buyers in Dubai, where presentation and perceived value are extremely important for luxury and collector items.
Nuummite is estimated to be around three billion years old and is known for its dark appearance combined with flashes of iridescent color beneath the surface. The stone is often associated with healing and spiritual properties, making it popular with collectors and buyers interested in rare minerals and gemstones.
Why Professional Gemstone Product Photography Matters
Luxury gemstones and collector pieces are particularly difficult to photograph well. The challenge is not simply documenting the object, but accurately capturing texture, depth, detail, reflections, and subtle color variations in a way that feels premium online.
Phone photography and basic lighting setups often fail to capture the internal detail of polished stones, making expensive pieces appear flat or low value. With high-end products, photography plays a major role in how the item is perceived by potential buyers.
For rare gemstones, jewellery, crystals, and luxury products, strong photography can significantly improve presentation, branding, buyer confidence, and perceived sale value.
Studio Lighting & Reflection Control
This product photography project was photographed in my studio using controlled lighting designed specifically for reflective and highly textured surfaces.
One of the biggest challenges when photographing gemstones and polished materials is managing reflections while still maintaining contrast and detail. Lighting angles, shadow control, and surface reflections all needed to be carefully adjusted throughout the shoot.
The goal was to reveal the natural detail and iridescence inside the Nuummite while maintaining a dramatic and luxurious visual style suitable for collectors and luxury presentation.
Layered Product Photography & Photoshop Compositing
This particular shoot took a full day to complete, experimenting with different lighting positions, exposure settings, and layered image combinations.
Multiple photographs were combined in Photoshop using compositing techniques to refine reflections, improve texture visibility, and preserve detail across different parts of the stone. This approach is commonly used in high-end commercial product photography where a single exposure cannot fully capture the product accurately.
The final image was designed not only to show the gemstone clearly, but to position it visually as a premium collector piece.

Behind the Scenes of the Product Photography Shoot
Below you can also view behind-the-scenes footage from the studio setup used during this Nuummite product photography project, showing part of the lighting and production process used to create the final image.
Multiple flash frames were used to create the final images, as lighting the whole product at once would have been very challenging.
This Nuummite project is part of my wider jewellery and luxury product photography portfolio, including gemstone photography, ecommerce jewellery photography, and commercial campaigns for luxury brands.
