Airport Duty Free Retail Photography – Phnom Penh

I was commissioned to photograph a series of duty-free retail environments at Phnom Penh International Airport, working across multiple international beauty and luxury brands including Lancôme, Armani, Prada, Yves Saint Laurent, Valentino, Shu Uemura, and Miu Miu.

The project focused on capturing high-end retail spaces, product displays, and brand presentation within a busy airport environment, where consistency, lighting control, and attention to detail are critical.

High-End Retail & Brand Environments

Duty-free retail photography requires a different approach to standard interiors. Each brand has strict visual guidelines, and every image needs to reflect premium positioning, clarity, and consistency across multiple locations and displays.

This shoot involved documenting:

  • Full retail environments and store layouts
  • Branded product displays and feature stands
  • Customer-facing layouts within the airport space
  • Consistent visual standards across multiple luxury brands

Working with globally recognised brands means delivering imagery that aligns with international brand expectations, not just local presentation.

Clear Communication & Client Collaboration

Working with international brands requires more than technical ability. It depends on clear communication, reliability, and an understanding of client expectations from the outset.

I place a strong emphasis on communication throughout every project, ensuring that requirements are understood, timelines are clear, and the final delivery aligns with the client’s objectives. This includes discussing visual standards, brand expectations, and practical considerations before and during the shoot.

For many clients working in Cambodia, having a photographer who communicates clearly and delivers consistently provides confidence that the project will run smoothly, even in complex environments such as airport retail spaces.

Lighting & Technical Approach

Unlike hotel photography, where lighting is often shaped to create a mood or atmosphere, this project required a completely natural and accurate representation of the retail environment.

All images were captured using available light only, as the client needed the spaces to be shown exactly as customers experience them in the airport. The goal was not to create an idealised version of the space, but to deliver realistic, true-to-life imagery that reflects how each brand is presented in a live retail setting.

This approach introduced several technical challenges.

The combination of high-contrast lighting, reflective surfaces, and glossy product displays required careful control during capture. To manage reflections and maintain clarity across displays, I used polarising filters alongside HDR techniques, allowing me to balance exposure while preserving detail in both highlights and shadows.

Another challenge was the constant flow of passengers through the duty-free area. To achieve clean, usable images of each space, I worked with multiple frames and masking techniques, removing distractions while maintaining a natural and believable final result.

The end result is a consistent set of images that accurately represent each retail environment while meeting the visual standards expected by international brands.

Product Detail Within Retail Environments

Within each retail space, product presentation plays a key role in how customers interact with the brand. This project included capturing product displays, feature stands, and detailed retail layouts in a way that remains consistent with the overall environment.

Unlike studio product photography, these images are created within real retail conditions. This requires careful attention to:

  • reflections and packaging surfaces
  • colour accuracy under mixed lighting
  • maintaining consistency across multiple displays

The goal is to ensure that products are clearly presented while still feeling natural within the space, supporting both brand perception and customer experience.

Alongside this type of work, I also provide studio-based product photography in Cambodia, using controlled lighting setups to create precise, high-quality images for e-commerce, advertising, and brand campaigns.

Applying Commercial Standards to Hospitality Photography

While this project focused on duty-free retail environments, the same technical discipline applies directly to hotel and hospitality photography.

Working with international brands requires:

  • Consistency across multiple spaces
  • Accurate colour and material representation
  • Attention to detail in how environments are presented to customers
  • The ability to deliver under real-world conditions

In hospitality photography, these principles are just as important. Guests are not only influenced by atmosphere, but by how real and trustworthy the images feel when deciding where to stay.

The experience of photographing live retail environments, where nothing can be staged or controlled, strengthens my approach when working with hotels, restaurants, and resorts. It ensures that images are not only visually appealing, but also accurate, consistent, and aligned with guest expectations.

Hotel & Hospitality Photography in Cambodia

Alongside commercial projects like this, I specialise in hotel photography in Cambodia, working with boutique hotels, resorts, and hospitality brands to create images that support both branding and bookings.

Photoshoot Gallery

This gallery showcases a selection of images captured across multiple duty-free retail spaces at KTI (Phnom Penh International Airport). Working within a live airport environment, the focus was on accurately documenting each brand’s presentation, layout, and customer-facing experience.

As a Phnom Penh photographer, projects like this require a balance of technical precision and real-world adaptability, ensuring that each space is captured as it is experienced by customers. From wide retail environments to detailed product displays, the images reflect the scale and standard of international brands operating within Phnom Penh’s airport.
